ADULT WORKSHOP

Chinese Brush Painting
Fridays for 8 weeks:
October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
November 7, 14, 21
3:00–4:30 p.m.
Join master painter Jim Hardesty for this Museum favorite. All skill levels and ages are welcome.
Fees: $90 Museum Members/$100 nonmembers
Materials: $47 new students/$9 returning students

FAMILY WORKSHOP

Fall Eye-Opener: Mural Painting Workshop
Saturdays, September 27 and October 4

1:00–3:00 p.m.
Come celebrate the Museum’s new building project by designing and painting a special mural to decorate the construction fence around the site. For ages 8-12.
Fees: $35 for Members/$40 for nonmembers. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration and payment are required by 5:00 p.m. on September 22. Please call 607 255-6464.

Photographer Mary Ellen Mark will discuss her compelling body of work, including her recent photos exploring the high school prom. This event is funded by generous gifts from Jody and Peter Robbins, Gale and Ira Drukier, and Genevieve and Richard Tucker.

Art-full Family Saturday
10:00 a.m.–12:00 noon
Come along on an animal safari! Take a scavenger hunt through the galleries and search for lions, tigers, snakes, horses, and even dragons as we learn more about looking at art. The hunt begins at 10:00 a.m. with artmaking to follow at 11:00 a.m. FEES: Free for Museum Members/$5 per family for nonmembers. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Volunteer Opportunities for Students

Learn about the different ways you can get involved with the Johnson Museum. Any students with a love for art are encouraged to attend.

Identity in Western Art: Contemporary Art

Unravel the theme of identity in challenging work by contemporary artists like Cindy Sherman and Slater Bradley with educator Hannah Dunn.

For Students Only: Hidden Treasures Tour and Workshop
1:00–2:30 p.m.
Come explore the Museum’s collections with the Museum Club and discover some hidden masterpieces. Then get your hands dirty as you reproduce the art. No particular talents required!

For Students Only: Jazz Night
7:00–9:00 p.m.
Join the Museum Club for their annual celebration of art and jazz. The event will feature refreshments, prizes, live jazz, and all the current exhibitions. Free and open to all students.

Join guest curator Joe Burns, the Irving Porter Church Professor of Engineering and professor of astronomy, as he discusses the groundbreaking images in the exhibition Spectacular Saturn.

Filmmaker Brent Green will discuss his intriguing animations at this lecture, cosponsored by Cornell Cinema. On Saturday, September 27, Green will present his animations with live narration and music at 7:15 p.m. in Willard Straight Theatre; visit cinema.cornell.edu for more information.

 

OCTOBER

For Students Only: Prom Night
7:00–10:00 p.m.
Come celebrate prom once again! Eat, dance, get your picture taken . . . all the old favorites, plus stroll the galleries and make your own corsages and boutonnieres. Bring a date or a group of friends to this free event for students, hosted by the Panhellenic Association and the Museum Club, in conjunction with the exhibition Mary Ellen Mark: The Prom Series.

Identity in Western Art: Degas, Cassatt, and Friends

Celebrate the recent acquisition of Edgar Degas’s etching Sur la scène III and explore nineteenth-century portraiture and identity with educator Carol Hockett.

Join curator Andrea Inselmann as she explores the work of multimedia artist Marc Swanson.

Ask an Astronomer
11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Talk to astronomers in the galleries about the spectacular photographs of Saturn and create some interplanetary art at this family event. Held in conjunction with the American Astronomical Society Division for Planetary Sciences National Conference in Ithaca (October 11–14).

Discover the Johnson Museum after hours! All students are welcome at this annual late-night event, when all the galleries remain open, the lobby turns into a performance stage for student groups, and the mysterious sixth floor becomes a movie theater. This free event is hosted by the Museum Club.

28 Tuesday
Saturn Open House for Educators
3:30–5:00 p.m.
Join astronomers and scientists from the Department of Planetary Sciences and explore the exhibition Spectacular Saturn. Free visuals, door prizes, and refreshments will be provided. All are welcome to attend, but RSVPs are appreciated by e-mail to Carol Hockett at cih2@cornell.edu.

The Cornell Klezmer Music Ensemble will perform at this free concert. Hosted by the Museum Club.
